Most homes built today have their plenum and ductwork up in the attic. For those of you not familiar with the plenum it's just a 75 cent word for a box that extends off of your air handler. If you have your air handler in the closet of your house the plenum is what goes up into the attic and your a/c ducts attach to it. If your air handler is in the attic then the plenum is the large rectangular box that extends off of it and the a/c ducts are attached to it. The air from the air handler blows into the plenum which in turn goes into the ductwork and out your registers that you have throughout your house. During this process a lot of pressure is created and air like electricity will follow the path of least resistance. That means that if there are any spots that are not sealed air tight you are losing energy.
Here at HeatBlockers before we do any work we inspect your plenum and junction boxes for any leaks and if we find any leaks we put what is called a mastic seal on them. A mastic seal is like a thick paint that dries on rock hard and creates an air tight seal. The product is so effective that in 2005 the State Legislature made it mandatory that all homes built in Texas after 2005 had to their plenums sealed with it. This is a complimentary service when we install the radiant barrier and the results are very beneficial for those that need it. Before HeatBlockers is done with a job we want to make sure that we've done everything we can, no matter how small, to ensure your satisfaction and long term energy savings.
