Initially, it is important to note that Radiant Barrier Paint is in fact not a Radiant Barrier but rather an (IRCC) Interior Radiation Control Coat. A radiant barrier by definition must have low emissivity usually 0.1 or less which means it needs to reflect a minimum of at least 90% of the radiant heat transfer. The best paint has been tested to reflect 78% of the radiant heat. An IRCC does work to some degree, although it is not a true Radiant Barrier.1 Once you understand the difference and compare the two products, it's pretty plain to see that a Radiant Barrier is a much better choice.

Some questions you might want to ask about a radiant barrier product:

  • how effective is it at its best?
  • how long will it last?
  • how long will it be effective?
  • at what point does the effectiveness begin to fade?
These are some very good questions to consider before making a purchase.
